School Resource Officers
The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office maintains a strong partnership with Catoosa County Public Schools to provide a safe environment that supports learning, good citizenship and leaders of the future. A school resource officer (SRO) is assigned to work full time in each middle and high school and at the Battlefield Academy.
Each SRO is trained for the Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety (CHAMPS) program, in addition to the training requirements for an accredited SRO. The CHAMPS program promotes family conversations that encourage students to make healthy choices when faced with the challenges of growing up, including avoiding alcohol and drug use, internet safety, bullying and more. SROs give hundreds of hours of CHAMPS instruction to more than 800 fifth grade and more than 350 seventh grade students.
- Patrol school buildings and grounds
- Issue warnings and citations to traffic violators on school property
- Investigate traffic crashes that occur on school property
- Remove school property trespassers at the request of the principal and other authorized administrators, or as the SRO believes necessary for school safety
